Goals/Storyboard
This assignment is to help you think about:
- why you want to build a site,
- who the audience will be,
- what type of information you want to include and
- how you will manage the information.
Don't worry about having to be exact with your goals and storyboard. Your site may change directions many times as you work on it over a period of time -- way past this class. (Web sites are never done, only the current phase of it is done.)
WARNING: You must hand in your assignments on paper with your name and section # at the top. If you leave off your name and/or section#, you will not get credit for this assignment.
Instructions
Part A
Goals. Hand in a typed copy answering the following questions:
- What is the goal of this Web site? Why is your site needed? Is it to advertise your organization, provide information to customers, educate individuals about a particular topic, provide a service or process orders?
- Who is the intended audience? Are they potential customers, friends, family?
- Do you want your viewers to communicate with you through your Web site? How?
- What are the existing material which can be used in the web site? (brochures, flyers, manuals, database files, tv commercials, photos). Do the files exist in digital form or are they in print only?
- List a realistic set of goals which you feel you can accomplish in 8 weeks. You may also want to determine goals for the project in 6 months or longer. Be careful not to set unrealistic goals like scanning in 50 photos or creating 20 web pages.
A typical beginning site is 5-10 web pages 2-10 graphics and 5-10 external links.
You must have no fewer than 5 pages on your site. All pages must be fully functional (with navigation) but a couple may only have a few paragraphs or a shell of information.
Below is an example of a set of realistic goals which can be accomplished in 8 sessions.
I am targeting people in the travel business. They will use my site to help them find goods and services in their businesses. I will use art from exotic locations around the world that I will scan in from photos I took.
This project will offer 6 fully completed pages.
These are the main features:
- The opening screen will explain my business and describe the services that I have to offer.
- A separate Web page for every service that I offer, which can grow in number over time.
- A Web page with additional information about my company.
- A form page for interested customers to send me information about themselves and their companies. (I'd like to begin this during the Intro class and finish it in the Advanced class).
- Navigational bars or links will be created so all parts of the project will easily link together.
By the end of this class and the advanced HTML class I expect to have the form page fully functional and have the site will registered with at least 10 different search engines.
- List any additional information you think is important.

Part B
Storyboard (choose one method):
- Draw on paper in pencil or with color pencils, crayons, pastels, in black and white or color your storyboard. Hand in.
- Draw in your favorite computer program, in black and white or color your storyboard. Print out and hand in.
Here are two examples of storyboards. Seen on this page is a simple storyboard I made in Photoshop. You can see a Complicated Storyboard I did in PageMaker. This is a .pdf file which means you need Acrobat Reader to see it. Most computer users have Acrobat Reader. If you don't, you can get it free from the adobe.com site or view it on the computers in SRJC's computer labs.
